So what would be scarier: to be attacked by a monster or to be stuck with a madman as he hunted for the monster? Or was there even a beast at all? Here we begin to see some of Nautissu's obsession and how far he will go to defeat the monster, and some of why people call him a traitor and enemy.

And I love the design work Gil did on this page! This story was originally conceived for the same steampunk anthology that I submitted ANCIENT BEASTS, COURIER, AN ACCOUNTANT'S VACATION and GOTHIC GHOST STORY to. Being steampunk though meant that the sub needed to be designed so it could run without electronics. If you look at the googles and gloves that Nautissu wears, you can see the tubes that extend up to the top of the sub. The idea was that the sub effectively if run by hydraulics with small changes in pressure of the tubes controlling the engines and periscopes (the image from which is piped in and displayed on the goggles through a liquid-bases lens system). I had no idea if what I was describing made sense at all or if it just sounded like a writer's bad ravings, but Gil did a fantastic job realizing them!

One regret about the page/story is there wasn't enough room to explore the ancient underground caverns more. We touched on some of the creatures and the origins, but in fact these aren't just empty caverns. The idea was that there were ancient relic down there that they would move past, signs of a civilization that existed long before man. It was going to be both a nod to HP Lovecraft's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS and would have referenced back to my story RISING and that tale of an ancient god. Now I guess I'll have to find a new way to explore those caverns!

Next page goes live on Saturday! Until then please vote for me on Topwebcomics. Every vote helps!

ALSO I've been working on the next story, which will start in February. Since February is Valentine's month, I try to have a love-themed story...albiet a twisted sort of love story. Last year I told two -- BEING OTHER PEOPLE, about a couple who try roll playing that goes a little too well, and GOD OF ALL THING, the story of a heart-broken boy who goes on a strange and dangerous journey. This year there will only be one Feb-love story, but I'm debating between two stories. One is MEDUSA, the real story behind the Greek myth of a queen who was torn between the love of her people and a mysterious warrior whose ship crashes onto her island, or the story MUSEUM OF HORRIBLE TASTES about a group of yuppies who stumble on a museum created by a man with a passion for the worst tasting foods you can imagine.

Have a preference? Let me know what you'd like to read next!

No one huh, I am more and more convinced that my idea about this story is right. Nautissu is pretty similar to Nautilus and Nemo is I believe Greek for no one
